Day 236
The walls shake with every footfall of the Giant Hulkars that march for the once great city of Cestmir, the tens of thousands of evil abominations jeer and shout their war cries at us as they mill about the feet of the Hulkars. Preparing for the next and final assault.
You may call me a defeatist if you will for thinking Cestmir will fall, but I stood in the great Citadel of Marita while commanders declared the Ordio Legio would break against its four great walls. And now I stand in Cestmir looking out over the battlements at the sea of abominations, I see only more coming. But no one has illusions that the Ordio Legio will falter at Cestmir.
Their strategy will be the same as always, and we are powerless to stop such a numerous force. Hordes of infantry and undead will use the breaks in the defences caused by the Hulkars to flood into the city. On more then one occasion my Company has been tasked with holding a section of wall against the traitorous humans that joined the Ordio Legio, they are oft gifted with weapons and armour of Demonic origins.
The tactics they employ for each attack are always new, they find new ways each time to shock the men, throwing heads of the fallen seems a popular favourite for them. On one occasion we were even affronted by genitalia as they charged over the battlements stark naked. The slaughter seems like a game to them, as they care little for who lives and dies on either side. They do not give up a breach in the wall once they have established one, regardless of casualties. Had such fighters remained loyal to humanity the Ordio Legio would never have succeeded in their conquest.
Perhaps if humanity united at the outset, so many lives could have been saved. Instead kings and Lords looked to their own defences rather then aid each other, I’m but a simple soldier and it is not my place to question what my lord commands. But its plain to see human kind is selfish and condemned itself to death.
Most of the companies are pulling out of Cestmir to Caliburn, a few have elected to stay and give time to the rest of us in our retreat. I’m far past the point of caring about retreating, it has kept me alive so far.
Day 242
We can still see the fires of Cestmir behind us. Though some of the other Captains believe it may be the Ordio Legio on our tail.
But it is not all bad news; word has reached us that a mighty force musters at Caliburn. One to rival the Ordio Legio some have said. I can only hope and pray this to be true, if Caliburn falls there is no great fortress or city north to flee to. Only barren lands north and forests to the east await us if we fail at Caliburn.
Day 256
We arrived at the mustering fields of Caliburn just before last light two days ago, Since then I have barely had time to eat. We have busied ourselves rearming and having our damaged armour repaired by the hundreds of smiths that have lined up in the centre of the tent city erecting as more and more soldiers arrive, it seems every man able to use a weapon has been drafted. Win of lose this will be a battle remembered for eternity.
Day 261
The First of the Ordio Legio have been spotted south of us, they seem content to watch us. Perhaps they to realise the scale of the coming battle and its result will determine the fate of all, the men have found new faith in the prince of Caliburn. Evraine. They say his speeches can rouse even the most defeated man, perhaps I should pay visit to his
